Say Hello final piece critic

redone with Photoshop, after discussing with my partner the previous card, it was pointed out to me that there was more to me then my space station. I love lots of colors so i have included bright colors and contrasting images.
on the main page the images are more sketch like, this is representation of my room. The main picture is probably the most important to me my two dogs in cartoon form. the back illustrates my hobby's.
sailing, dress making and painting.

my favorite parts of this card are the sailing part and the dogs. they where both independent drawings/paintings before i put them together for the card.

I think it works well as a card, however i suffered from two problems, first i was running out of ink and couldn't afford currently to replace it, and second the card was designed in RGB instead of CMYK which is preferable for printing hence why the colours appear slightly muted

Mind Maps

I found angry the hardiest mind map was angry, maybe because i have few memory of being personally angry or maybe because those specific memory i do not wish to remember.
i enjoyed childhood and seaside  !

Johannes Voss - Magic the Gathering illustrations - writing a brief

Magic the Gathering

The following is from the card game magic the gathering and very much emphasise the type of digital art i would like to progress to. im not really even sure if it comes under art ie painting or illustration ..
the lines to me seem to be a bit blurred.
i read in Illustration by Andrew Hall that there is two types of art applied art (illustration/graphic design) and fine art.  the book contextualizes the first applied art into something that supports someones problem or product. the second is stand alone. ie you can view it as a piece of art in its own right. to me the below piece of art is both, it illustrates the card properties for the game helping to sell the cards, because its pretty, but to me i think the image stands alone as a remarkable image in its own right.
in general i love the magic the gathering art, but why i picked this image in particular is for two reasons first the colours of the wings and the glass window effect of her wings, i think i have a bit of thing for wings. and second the perspective.  i also think the values are stunning.

Brief  -create a scene of a guardian looking after a city, the scene will be focused on a winged guardian, with non typical wings. the genre is high fantasy materials used digital.

i did some research on wizards of the coasts usual briefs, they can be vague due to not wanting to pre release information.

Say Hello , first draft

well i started work on my first assignment, i am not 100% sure about it so i expect to go through redrafts.

so the above is done through  a sketch then the line drawing cleaned up in photoshop, i then printed it on card and shaded with prismacolor Pencils.
This is pretty much in short my life in this illustration, or where i spend probably 80% of my time, it has some artistic licence the actual room has more computer equipment then shown here! pride of place is the wacom 21ux that i got second hand. i was trying to show the things I love to do, Writing, Illustration computer gaming and not forgetting my dogs!
That and my collection of books that is beginning to shrink now due to the fact that they are all on the kindle!
I used sketchy rough lines and a some what chaotic unrealistic placement of the tables. its not quiet right, i did this because im messy and chaotic and i am always saying new things at a tangent. so i tried to make everything a little off! i probably didn't have to try very hard if its one of the things i need to work on its perspective!
Originally i was thinking of adding in some paper engineering and using different materials. i do love trying new materials the rooms practically bursting with them, maybe i need to add them all in to!

PrismaColor

They Finally arrived ! Yay!
after waiting a month for these pencils to be delivered i was hoping the artists pencils Prismacolor's lived up to the widespread hype that seems to surround.

not surprisingly enough they are quite worth the hype, previous to this i have been using dewent coloursoft which are also fantastic pencils but tend to drop crumbly bits on the paper.

This also gave me a go at using zest it medium, which i thought was meant to be oderless but i still feel a bit lightheaded from it.

half fluffed up the picture from getting to slack with my paintbrush when using zest it.. oh well think i need to branch out into masking fluid and maybe some masking tape...

Titled At Sea - not a very original title i know ...

Leiliani Joy - illustrator/Artist

I came across miss Leilani Joys blog last night, while working ... the blog is really good and shows techniques the artist uses for stand alone art and for illustrations.  the blogs have really good tips for artists and even by watching her process it is encouraging to see a real artist in there element.

she mentions some techniques for drawing full figures, as i have never really formally studied art this really helped me in understanding it, i had come across the idea of angel lines to denote the angel of hips and shoulders but had not considered it in a more established context.

Leiliani Joy - Marie Antoinette - pink cupcake

What i love about the above picture is the shocking pink hair!

Having looked at more and more illustrations or art i think my compositions really need a bit more content. i suppose i get to a point where i think if i add more i will ruin it!  i think today i might experiment with backgrounds and content!

Cliff Wright

This is the last one i swear!
I came across this after writing the Quentin Blake post, i remebered that the covers from the Harry Potter series to be very nice, i did some googling and pinned down one of the artists responsible. Cliff Wright.

http://cliffwright.co.uk/illustration

I completly love the above picture!

and the jacket that caught my eye from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

done with watercolour. seems like watercolour is the favored medium among book and children story illustration!

Quentin Blake

I thought since i mentioned in a previous post about quentin blake i should just jot something quick down about him!
famous british illustrator, probably most known for working on Roald  Dahls books.

uses ink and water colour and bamboo pens.

faust shepard mash up

just practicing new watercolour techniques i decided to combine them both, all though i think my attempt at E.H Shepard looks more like Quentin Blake ...

Lauren Faust - Animator

ok so im not sure that Lauren Faust counts as an illustrator per say, but since animation is an illustration of something well alot of illustrations of something i figured it counted!

Lauren Faust is knowen for working on my little pony friendship is magic and powerpuff girls. i love the style and i love my little ponys from the 80s (sad but true!)

I think its something about animation that manages to be so engaging the lines in the drawing above well there arnt many but it produces character and the image of movement.

Watercolour - A foray!

ah my new freshly purchased supplies, i have watercolour pencils but not the pan / tube type of medium, i am going to experiment with the medium, plus the compact set is cute and portable!

E H Shepard

I decided to do a little bit of investigation into some of the other illustrators mentioned on the assignment sheet.
I was delighted to find that it covered winnie the pooh, and who doesn't love that silly old bear!
most of the art seems to be done in ink and sometimes watercolour for a splash of colour.
the characters are lovely animated and put you in mind of days spent playing in innocence.

of course i didn't play much with bears as a child i was a big fan of my little pony's.

A Word about Stuff!

Having released i dont really know much about illustrators, or sometimes even what encompasses illustration as a whole i decided to buy one of the course books. titled illustration by Andrew hall. as well as a sturdy sketch book.
I also have a book i previously bough titled writing and illustrating children books it seems a decent book!

i will update this when the book arrives
