Hale Attempt - Whistle, the amazing Ginger Ninja

done with watercolour pencils (supracolor) and ink. I had so much fun doing this.
having done some research after doing this i found out you can mask the white parts , ops would have come in handy before to know that !  love the carmine colour really pops with the blue sky!

i am not to brilliant with watercolour. possibly might be my third course choice.
the idea is based on my Pomeranian called whistle, i have two dogs the second being a samoyed called bells now bells is somewhat bigger the whistle and very playfull. to deal with this whistle has developed ninja tactics of hiding and pouncing on bells. it is very entertaining to watch!

Simpson Attempted - Raven ongoing

I was a bit worried about this, as it looks similar to the original... i did this in photoshop though having looked at the pictures i think the original artist might have used illustrator.

I also think the picture itself needs something else its a bit. empty!
I used contrasting colours of the green and orange to try and  bring the main image to the forground as well as bringing in purple highlights in the wings, i read somewhere that an item is never just the one colour it just appears that way so i tried to bring in more colour with in her eyes and wings.

The History of illustration - Steve Simpson (The Dark Inker) - to be edited

For a more current illustator i choose steve simpson, Simpson is a british illustrator that  has worked for comic and games company's, such as marvel, sony and Disney. (imagine FX pg 17 , issue 89)

Simpsons art is done in Photoshop, illustrator and with mix media.

I picked this art because his style fascinated me!

The above picture to me looks like it was done mostly in illustrator i love the fish swimming around her.

The History of Illustration - Kathleen Hale

for this task i decided to choose Kathleen Hale.
Kathleen Hale was a children illustrator from 1898 -2000, she is best known for her books about Orlando the marmalade cat. her art is mostly done in pencil ink and watercolor sometimes adding crayon.

i absolutely adore the above picture i think the below segment with the ziggy whiskers and the smiling cat face is so cute.

hales art is bold and her compositions are interesting the second combines a lot of different shapes but is semi monochrome using only yellow as a contrast.

i think the art of hale does well even in the modern age, it does not seem to me to be dated as such as a whole i would say it is pretty timeless!

Sketches

Previous Photoshop digital art

I set myself the task previously of illustrating tale from the grimm book of fairy tales, this is the first. the story is about a golden bird that steals golden apples from a kings garden. i was really happy with the way the bird came out and the use of colour on it. the background could do with some work and the tree looks a bit creepy in my opinion!

the lovely lady right is my attempt to play anywhere but here!

Illustration 1 - Learning log

Hi this is the beginning of my learning log for Open College of Arts, Illustration 1.  This Blog is intended to present work as i continue on though the above mentioned course.
My background in Art or in illustration is newly found, i have just completed a HNC in games design and knowing that i cannot continue to work and be in full time education i opted to find a distance course.
I love concept art for games and films, i also enjoy publication's such as imagine FX and i am exploring digital art.
I am currently trying to learn adobe illustrator as well as being proficient in Photoshop. incidentally if anyone is interested in learning computer programs i really suggest trying www.lynda.com its awesome!

I am a little bit dubious about the course in question, for one part because i might have covered a lot of the subject in concept art for my games design course, for another having been used to open university's publications i found the material i received to be a bit thin on the ground so to speak, however i have argued extensively with myself (like a crazy person) that since its a practical course maybe i am not giving the college its dues. so we shall see!

I am mainly doing this course, well because it looked like fun ... i am more interested in story telling though illustration, then other commercial applications for it.

My art background, over the last year i have tried to explore different options, except maybe full scale oil painting, this is mostly because just the thought of oil painting makes me think of dusty Renaissance paintings and while they are stunningly beautiful that sort of art does not appeal to me as something fun to create, that and it seems sort of expensive and like you need a ton of space. plus i am really messy if there paint about i will get it everywhere, hair cloths and probably up my nose!
I do like water colour and pencil based art and i try to sketch/draw from a photo every day, i love the old Disney type animation and find there characterization of say Thumper and Dumbo wonderful, i recently purchased the Disney animation archive studios Animation and Design books, they are hard back books that have art work from both the concept side and the animation cells used in everything from snow white to the latest the princess and the frog.

I hope to complete the course above semi fastish and then to continue onto creative writing 1 i cant remember the proper title of the course..

on a bit of a side note my drawing practice tends to be drawing while watching Netflix for some reason i tend to draw better this way, i think maybe because i am not over concentrating on it im more relaxed.
I will post some previous pictures so that i can keep track on my progress!

Thanks for reading my babble
